Fall term ARW with Mark

This term was really interesting for me! You are kind and eager to engage us to learn or write essay. Actually, I don't like writing essay because I'm not good at organizing what I want to say, but you always helped me, so I could finish my essay. Though I'm not sufficient to my essay, I have a confidence rather than spring term's one. And I'm not good at reading English academic text, but your lecture was useful and helpful to understand them, so I could learn a lot of things!
I think 20x20 presentation is very useful for students to rethink and organize their idea of their essay. In my case, I could think what is the most important point of my essay. Moreover I was interested on other classmates' presentation and got new ideas.

I didn't like ARW in spring term, but now I love ARW *^^* Thanks to you!
Please don't forget me and BD!

After reading Diamond

Summary(main idea)
Diamond says that people define 'race' by using visual characters like skin color, eyes and hair. However it is unnecessary because it is not scientific and unclear. it could be possible to divide people into many different sections by using natural selection, sexual selection and no meaning one, but these sections are sometimes overlapped. They are unclear and vague. Thus It is difficult to divide people into biological categories.

Reaction
In class, when Mark gave us some pictures and asked us how many categories would make, I used visual characters to divide them. But after reading this text, I noticed it was not good way because it is unclear. And I was surprised if we use fingerprints to divide people, the result is that most Europeans and black Africans are same! Therefore, visual characters are totally not reliable to divide people.

After reading Shreeve

Summary(main idea)
Shreeve says the word 'race' are used by two ways; one is science. Another is other category like police or medical research. However, he states that 'race' should not be used as scientific meaning. It is difficult and impossible  for human to define the word 'race'.  Moreover it is also impossible to divide people into geographic regions such as Asians or Americans, because they are connected each other. Therefore we cannot define people as geographic way like 'the bushel-basket'. It is just traditional view to decide by appearances like skin color and so on.

Reaction
I can understand almost what Shreeve want to say, but there are no his opinion or specific conclusion. We all human are the same. We should not be divided. But 'race' is related with geography? So, my race is Asian, Japanese. That's all ?!

After reading Gould

Summary(main idea)
Gould shows that scientists need to recognize that their perception influence society. Actually scientists do do not notice their perceptions are objective and they influence society unconsciously. Blumenbach's idea is one example, it engages readers to think that the one definition of 'race' is dangerous because it has a big influence on society.

Reaction
I agree with Gould's idea that scientists influence our society. In my case, if I want to know about scientific problem or issue, I always rely and believe scientists' idea. I do not doubt their opinion because I think they are professional to these topic and they have researches, as a result, they have strong evidences. That's why I think scientists' ideas or perceptions have a big influence on our society.

20×20 reaction

I really enjoyed this presentation. This time was the first time for me to make a presentation, so it was difficult to make how to arrange and summary my essay's content in just 20 pages and 20 seconds. However, this was very useful for me to rethink my topic. Especially, when I had to make a short sentence or keywords in one pages, I could think what I wanted to convey again.

Essay "The Problem of Social Network"

The reason why I chose "The Problem of Social Network" is because social network is related with our daily life. There are a lot of social network, for example, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and mixi.
It is very popular. This site shows some research of relation or percentage to social network.

Social network has both positive and negative points.
'POSITIVE'
We can chat with friends, write daily events, share photos and videos and so on. In business, they can use them to appeal their products or events as well. It is really useful to communicate and share information. For example, if we cannot use system of mail or calling, we can use social network instead.

'NEGATIVE'
1.Privacy problem All people can access to our profile. There are name, photos, birth of date or town etc...so we have no privacy. Therefore some people use social network to meet unknown people for sexual problems.

2.Reliability of information Everyone can spread and share information. People tend to receive them without doubts. It sometimes makes a confusion. Worst of all, it leads to frauds.

3.Discrimination(Bulling) Someone who have social network's account vs Someone who doesn't have them
The former tends to feel collectivism and consider the latter as other group. On the other hand, the latter tends to feel isolated.

My opinion & Solution
I think social network is good if we use it as a just one of tools. We should use it critically. When we receive information, we should judge it by ourselves. We should have responsibility.
We can set up profile or photos to just family and friends.

Reaction to Fisher

This text is very interesting for me, because I'm interested in communication. I didn't know about perception there are many kinds of them, Experiential, Selective and so on. I think they are connected each other. We select,  infer or evaluate something we think it is collect or we like by using our experiences as basic material . After that, the result would be inaccurate or wrong. However, if the result would be wrong, we tend to consider it is not wrong as much as possible. For the way of thinking like that is one of perceptions. Therefore can't we believe our choice? Our perception may be really individual and sometimes selfish.

I like 'Sensation and Interpretation'. This kind of pictures are fun, because we cannot see both figures at the same time after we know them. It is  really mysterious! I searched some interesting pictures. Especially I kike first one!

Reaction to Barna

As I went to England this summer, I experienced the differences between different cultures. Therefore I could understand it is really important to know the differences in order to communicate with other countries' people. First the difference I was surprised is they talked about their boyfriends easily because I think it is a little bit rude to ask about boy friends in Japan at first. This is 'Tendency to Evaluate'. Second the difference is 'Language Differences'. Of course Phrases and words are difficult to understand. Moreover I think pronunciation is also included. My host family used Australian accent, so I couldn't catch what they said.
Through this text, I noticed what the cultural Japanese is. For example, smile is just greeting or the Japanese are inscrutable. It is interesting for me.

My book reaction 'The GIVER'

The GIVER
I read 'The GIVER' as a summer reading assignment. This book is science a fiction story in 1993. This book won the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold more than 5.3 million copies.

Lois Lowry
Lois lowry  (on March 20, 1937) is an American author of children's literature. She always writes complex issues as racism, terminal illness, murder, and the Holocaust among other challenging topics.

The reason why I chose it is because my friend recommended it. She said it was easy to read and understand, and it was also interesting. That's why I chose The GIVER.

This world has no worry, no hunger, no mental pain.... so it is like Utopia. There are also no feeling, no color, no choice....On the other hand, there are a lot of strict rules. Many things are prohibitted in order to protect people from dangerous or wrong choices. It is strange world. The main character a boy, Jonas who is 12 years old. He is appointed The Receiver of Memory. This assignment is to receive all memories of whole world. He knew feelings, 'happy' 'love' and 'lonliness' 'cruel of war' like mental pain. He noticed the world with feelings was better and it was important to have them, so finally he decided to try to change the commity.

First I thought the scary of the controled world. There is no character and no free. If so, we cannot have the meaning of living! It is good because everybody is different each other. Second I thoughtthe importance of individual. The world in this book has no choice, but we have to choose by ourselves! Because we should think and understand ourselves.Actually it is hard to decide something by ourselves, however, the result whether the choice is good or not doesn't matter. The behavior of choosing by ourselves is important. Finally I noticed the imporyance of mental pain. I know mental pain, so I can  know mental happiness. For example, I know war is terrible thing, so I also know peace is imprtant.

I like this book. I really enjoyed reading it. I hope the world like this controled crazy world will not come in the future!
