Fall term ARW with Mark

This term was really interesting for me! You are kind and eager to engage us to learn or write essay. Actually, I don't like writing essay because I'm not good at organizing what I want to say, but you always helped me, so I could finish my essay. Though I'm not sufficient to my essay, I have a confidence rather than spring term's one. And I'm not good at reading English academic text, but your lecture was useful and helpful to understand them, so I could learn a lot of things!
I think 20x20 presentation is very useful for students to rethink and organize their idea of their essay. In my case, I could think what is the most important point of my essay. Moreover I was interested on other classmates' presentation and got new ideas.

I didn't like ARW in spring term, but now I love ARW *^^* Thanks to you!
Please don't forget me and BD!

After reading Diamond

Summary(main idea)
Diamond says that people define 'race' by using visual characters like skin color, eyes and hair. However it is unnecessary because it is not scientific and unclear. it could be possible to divide people into many different sections by using natural selection, sexual selection and no meaning one, but these sections are sometimes overlapped. They are unclear and vague. Thus It is difficult to divide people into biological categories.

Reaction
In class, when Mark gave us some pictures and asked us how many categories would make, I used visual characters to divide them. But after reading this text, I noticed it was not good way because it is unclear. And I was surprised if we use fingerprints to divide people, the result is that most Europeans and black Africans are same! Therefore, visual characters are totally not reliable to divide people.

After reading Shreeve

Summary(main idea)
Shreeve says the word 'race' are used by two ways; one is science. Another is other category like police or medical research. However, he states that 'race' should not be used as scientific meaning. It is difficult and impossible  for human to define the word 'race'.  Moreover it is also impossible to divide people into geographic regions such as Asians or Americans, because they are connected each other. Therefore we cannot define people as geographic way like 'the bushel-basket'. It is just traditional view to decide by appearances like skin color and so on.

Reaction
I can understand almost what Shreeve want to say, but there are no his opinion or specific conclusion. We all human are the same. We should not be divided. But 'race' is related with geography? So, my race is Asian, Japanese. That's all ?!

After reading Gould

Summary(main idea)
Gould shows that scientists need to recognize that their perception influence society. Actually scientists do do not notice their perceptions are objective and they influence society unconsciously. Blumenbach's idea is one example, it engages readers to think that the one definition of 'race' is dangerous because it has a big influence on society.

Reaction
I agree with Gould's idea that scientists influence our society. In my case, if I want to know about scientific problem or issue, I always rely and believe scientists' idea. I do not doubt their opinion because I think they are professional to these topic and they have researches, as a result, they have strong evidences. That's why I think scientists' ideas or perceptions have a big influence on our society.

20×20 reaction

I really enjoyed this presentation. This time was the first time for me to make a presentation, so it was difficult to make how to arrange and summary my essay's content in just 20 pages and 20 seconds. However, this was very useful for me to rethink my topic. Especially, when I had to make a short sentence or keywords in one pages, I could think what I wanted to convey again.
